On July 15th, Dr. Ole-Petter Hamnvik from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts was our guest for the eleventh FYRM session. Dr. Hamnvik, who attended medical school in Ireland and subsequently received post-graduate training in the United States, discussed his career trajectory with TMDU students. Fielding questions about the advantages and disadvantages of studying and working outside one’s home country, Dr. Hamnvik also compared medical programs and health care systems in Norway, Ireland and the U.S. Dr. Hamnvik gave very practical advice, such as how to become a competitive candidate, to students who expressed interest in continuing their medical education or careers outside of Japan. However, he also reassured students that if they become capable and confident practitioners in Japan, then they will be equally capable and confident in international settings. We’d like to thank Dr. Hamnvik for sharing his experiences, two HSLP students who served as hosts, as well as all those at TMDU who participated in making this FYRM session so stimulating and enjoyable.
