In order to encourage the growth of innovative thinking, 1st year HSLP students attended a Design Thinking Bootcamp (DTbc) lead by industry professionals. Over the course of two days, our students practiced brainstorming, sketching, telling stories and conducting interviews to stretch their creative thinking and to learn how to conduct empathetic, or human-centered, research skills. Each team of students was tasked with prototyping and presenting a new technology that could help individuals achieve a change in their behavior; ideas ranged from a digital cane for seniors that could serve as a voice controlled planner and even call for help in an emergency, to a smartphone app that could help heavy users of SNS gradually limit the amount of time they spend online. The skills students practiced during the DTbc will help support them in their future research and problem-solving endeavors, whether in the library, clinic, boardroom, or laboratory and in their quest to become global leaders in the future.
