Critical Thinking Bootcamp, 2016 Fall

On October 22 and 23 we conducted our annual fall boot camp for strengthening critical thinking skills. On Saturday students learned the basics of critical thinking and how to put this into practice through many different speaking activities. The timed activities put a lot of pressure on students with impressive results. By the end of the day they seemed to have the three parts of Opinion-Reason-Evidence (ORE) down pretty well. On the second day of the workshop, they practiced mind mapping and learned the standards of critical thinking. Students then critiqued each other’s arguments using these standards, leading to another very active day of discussions.

This fall’s boot camp was very lively with 28 first-year HSLP students in attendance. They were also very lucky to have five senior HSLP students to facilitate their conversations and give them feedback. You could see that it was tough speaking English from 9am-5pm, but it was impressive to see how motivated and diligent these students are.
