2017 “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session Series No. 35 held

35th “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session July 3, 2017

In the 35th “Find-Your-Role-Model Session” on July 3, we welcomed Dr. Yuya Hagiwara, a specialist in family medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and Palliative care. Having taken ECFMG during university, Dr. Hagiwara did his clinical clerkship mostly in the US during his 5th and 6th year of medical school, and just after graduation, seeking a wide range of clinical practice, started his career in family medicine also in the US. He chose a career in academia and he is now an Associate Fellowship Program Director and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Palliative Care, University of Iowa.
In this session, Dr. Hagiwara told us not only how to be a clinician in the US, but also how to develop your career in universities in the US, where the requirements for each position is defined clearly. Also, taking advantage of his experience as an educator, he told us about the training system for palliative care practitioners, where residents learn to manage family meetings in one-on-one tutoring with a specialist. Considering that this field is not yet well developed in Japan, the whole discussion was really stimulating for the audience.
