2018 “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session Series No. 45 held

45th “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session October 23, 2018

The 45th Find-Your-Role-Model, held on October 23rd, welcomed Dr. Hiroaki Wakimoto from Harvard University as our guest. Dr. Wakimoto, who is a graduate of TMDU, has been engaged in brain tumor research after he completed training as a neuro-surgeon. Currently he conducts “translational research” at Harvard University where he uses patient-derived brain tumor stem cells to discover the mechanisms of this devastating condition.

One of the key topics of this session was how to pursue a career as both a researcher and a physician. Although Dr. Wakimoto acts as a global leader in both roles, he says that making research and clinical work compatible has been challenging. However, his experience tackling brain tumors as a neurosurgeon has greatly influenced his motivation and ideas as a researcher. He also mentioned that the US research environment is more welcoming for “Physician Scientists” compared to Japan.

Many students are interested in both research and clinical careers in the future, although it may be more difficult than typically imagined. Dr. Wakimoto encouraged students to keep searching for their interests and take advantage of research opportunities while still young.
