This year’s GCW sessions started off May 17 on a good note with full attendance, and now we are already halfway through. These workshops are meant to introduce students to logical speech and critical thinking skills through negotiation-based discussion concerning a global health topic. Another goal is for students to realize their own language fluency level; then make goals for improvement. We appreciate the great effort students have exhibited so far, because we realize these workshops are not easy and that negotiation is a skill that can only be improved by practice. However, we believe they are a good way to practice English reading, speaking, and listening in a group oriented setting. Please keep up the good work!

The 2014 sessions of GCW have drawn to a close. We were very pleased at the showing from all six TMDU faculties for a total of 145 participants. The help of many foreign students from TMDU’s PhD course also made the negotiation table a lot more exciting. Undergrad students were able to not only practice negotiation and English skills, but were able to meet many interesting “sempai” from other countries.

Different from last year’s workshops was the great help from Global Education’s Health Sciences Leadership Program (HSLP) students. Each negotiation group had at least one HSLP tutor to assist participants all throughout the workshops. In the post-workshop questionnaires, many thanks were expressed to these tutors for making participants feel less stressful.

The world of negotiation never has a set answer; the outcome depends a lot on the personalities of the people involved. We saw this in the four weeks of GCW in the different turns the negotiations took. There were many motivated students in this year’s participants, and we are looking forward to watching for their achievements in the coming years. Remember to not be shy; mistakes are to be expected when learning something new. Be brave enough to step out of your comfort zone and strive for growth.
