TMDU×Waseda Discussion café on October 3rd, 2020

Our 14th Discussion Café, an ongoing collaboration between TMDU and Waseda University, was held on Saturday, October the 3rd. The event brought together over 40 students with diverse backgrounds from both universities…via Zoom!

Under these difficult circumstances due to COVID-19, we used a web conferencing system (Zoom) for this event to avoid face-to-face interactions. Although it was our first attempt to hold the TMDU×Waseda Discussion Café online, we were able to make it meaningful for many participants especially thanks to the flexibility of Waseda ICC staff, who mainly worked for this event. TMDU task force members are very eager to make the next event fruitful and even more suitable for the online form.

This time, students tackled the topic of Beauty Standards, which asked them to reconsider what is “beauty,” how it differs from one culture to another and what kind of social problems regarding “beauty” exist. All the discussion groups had interesting viewpoints and some of them reached insightful conclusions such as: “Many companies make use of beauty standards and people’s desire to be more beautiful for making money” and “More exposure to advertisements and ‘beautiful’ posts on SNS makes us amplify our desire to be ‘beautiful.’” It was very precious opportunity for every student to think about a familiar topic from various points of view.

Discussion Café is a fantastic opportunity to practice English communication skills as well as to network with students from a wide variety of majors, career goals and cultural backgrounds. This event would not have been possible without the hard work of Waseda University’s ICC staff, and the assistance of TMDU’s Task Force, who all worked very hard to prepare for this event!

The next Discussion Café will be held online on Saturday, December 5. We hope to see you all then!
