Health Sciences Leadership Program

In order to become a world-level leader in the medical and/or medical fields.

OVERVIEW

This all-English leader-training program, which spans several years, targets students who harbor strong aspirations for global careers in medicine and/or medical fields. It is the flagship of the university undergraduate global human resource development initiatives, for the purpose of training world-level leaders in bioscience research, global health, health policy and medical industries.

Why was HSLP started?

Japan holds high standards of healthcare such as in cancer treatment and endoscopy, and has achieved the world’s highest level of life expectancy due to its national health insurance system. However, even though there is rapid globalization in the world, at the national level, a delay in global standardization of healthcare can be observed in Japan. In addition, Japan’s global presence is fading in the fields of health science research, global health, health policy, and healthcare industries.
TMDU has been actively promoting global education and research, which has attracted many students who choose our university because of a strong interest in global careers. We believe it is our mission to produce future world leaders in health science research, global health, health policy, and healthcare industries. This is why we started HSLP.

What is our aim?

We aim to produce future world leaders in health science research, global health, health policy, and healthcare industries as below:

  • Those who engage in health science research, actively apply for a position in the world’s leading research institutions, and contribute to the development of their chosen research field as a leader or front runner.
  • Those who build a high level of expertise and comprehensive experience in their chosen specialty area upon completion of the bachelors degree program, and engage as a leader in the fields of global health and health policy.
  • Those who build a high level of expertise and a comprehensive experience in their chosen specialty area upon completion of the bachelors degree program, and engage as a leader in international cooperative activities and the international healthcare industry.

What are the skills students acquire?

What are the skills students acquire?

We think that Japan’s delay in global standardization of healthcare and fading global presence are attributed not only to low levels of English proficiency, but also to the lack of sophisticated knowledge, intellectual skills, interpersonal skills, and leadership skills which are necessary to analyze things from a broad perspective and to productively contribute to discussions with people from different cultural backgrounds in order to solve complex global health issues. HSLP will support those of you who have strong aspirations for global careers in health science in acquiring and polishing these skills.

What is HSLP curriculum like?

HSLP starts in the second semester of the first year and ends in the final year of the Bachelors degree program. Step by step, according to a student’s learning rate, they will acquire skills described on the “HSLP Competency Table”. During the first three years of HSLP, they will learn to proactively solve problems through “case method” using cases that students may face in the future. We also provide intensive courses for students to learn about some of the skills included in the “HSLP Competency Table” such as critical thinking and design thinking skills. Furthermore, study abroad experience (research training, clinical clerkship, School of Public Health, etc.) is necessary to complete HSLP. Senior students will participate in group discussions with their juniors as tutors and role models to stimulate and deepen the discussions through their broad perspective which they themselves gained through study abroad experiences.

What is a “case method”?

What is a “case method”?

Case method is a hands-on learning approach that was introduced and has been used at Harvard Business School since the early 1900s. By using real/simulated cases which require learner’s prompted judgment and decisions and also by having class-wide or group discussions, students are able to polish their decision-making and problem-solving skills. Faced with complex cases, students will polish many of the skills necessary for future global leaders, such as logical thinking, critical thinking, communication, team-building and leadership skills.

Formation of a community

Formation of a community

The road to becoming a global leader in the health science field is very long and lonely, and needs a long-range perspective with clear goals and visions. However, for a HSLP student, this is not a lonely path. Classmates, seniors, juniors, graduates, and faculty who are working hard towards similar goals form a community to stimulate each other, support each other, and grow together towards those goals. It is this community that will be your major driving force and the most essential property of HSLP. Come and join our community! Your door to your future will be surely be opened…
