TMDU×Imperial College London Discussion Café on April 20th, 2024

On Saturday, April 20th, 2024, TMDU hosted the Imperial College London & TMDU Discussion Café as part of the Imperial College London (ICL) exchange program to TMDU. Approximately 35 students, including ICL exchange students, TMDU undergraduate students, and TMDU international graduate students, gathered to discuss the topics “Healthcare Systems” and “Work Environment”. The event provided a platform for participants to share diverse perspectives and learn about current healthcare issues not only Japan and the UK but of various other countries.
During the first discussion on “Healthcare Systems”, a key topic discussed was health care and its funding. As students of medicine and dentistry, the participants recognized the importance of making healthcare accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status. However, the students acknowledged that each country’s healthcare system is funded differently, leading to significant disparities in healthcare accessibility. The discussion aimed to identify elements of an ideal healthcare system that would be both sustainable and equitable.
The second discussion focused on “Work Environment” and included engaging conversations regarding labour issues in the UK and Japan, as well as the differences in how medical professionals work in various countries.
This dialogue provided valuable insights into the working styles of medical professionals, allowing future and current healthcare providers to reflect on and compare their professional environments.
Overall, the Discussion Café was a fruitful event, fostering international collaboration and broadening participants' understanding of global healthcare and work environment challenges.
