The 74th “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session in AY 2023 was held

The Fourth Find-Your-Role-Model Session in 2023 (74th in total) invited Dr. Takashi Sato, a professor of the Department of Immunology at TMDU.

After completing his doctoral course at Osaka University’s Graduate School of Medicine , he was mainly engaged in macrophage research at the same institution under Professor Akira. After becoming a professor at TMDU in 2020, he has been researching disease-specific macrophages widely, such as crosstalk to non-immune cells, and application to human diseases. He also revealed mechanisms in SARS-CoV-2 severity from viewpoints of immunology and genetics.

In the session, Dr. Satoh talked about his background in academia to date. When he was in a very famous laboratory at Osaka University, he focused on macrophages, which were not a popular research target at that time, and he proved his novel hypothesis of disorder-specific macrophage subtypes, discovering key factors for the macrophages to differentiate into each subtype.
From the story of his research life, full of ups and downs, we learned the importance of having our own “signature topic”, and the cycle that “interesting research results always lead to the next new research theme”.

In addition, his talk gave us an opportunity to consider how they should spend their university lives in the future for not only those who aim to become clinician scientists, but also all students in TMDU. In particular, we were deeply moved by his message that research results and meetings with people depend on luck. So it is very important to make the best efforts we can to gain this luck and to think about what we want to be in the next 5 to 10 years, ideally dedicating time to what we really love. His message was very memorable for us.
Thanks to what he told to us, we would like to consider our future goals, keep them in mind, and devote our time and effort to them.
