28th “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session (4th in 2016 Series)

We have been holding a series of events called “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session to provide students with opportunities to interact with TMDU alumni and worldwide leaders in health sciences. Through this roundtable-type, relaxed atmosphere event, we hope students will be able to find their role models in order to facilitate their career development in becoming future global leaders.

In the fourth FYRM session of academic year 2016 we will be hosting Dr. Masahiro Iwata, a freelance maxillofacial and oral surgeon. After establishing his career as an oral surgeon in Japan, he started volunteering in Cambodia as medical support in 2000. He continues to visit there several times a year to teach at a local university and perform surgery. He has performed over 1600 operations to date without compensation. Also, he was featured on "JOUNETSU-TAIRIKU", a popular Japanese documentary program, which was broadcast on February 21, 2016. This session will be carried out in a round-table discussion format, and will cover the following points. Everyone is welcome to join us in a hearty discussion.

  • Who is your mentor, and what inspired/ motivated your career?
  • What are the real medical/dental needs in developing countries and what role can a dentist play?
  • What experience during your student days at university was beneficial to your career? And in what way?
  • What difficulties do you face managing both your career in Japan and volunteering in Cambodia?
  • Future career plans
