46th “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session (5th in 2018 Series)

We have been holding a series of events called “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session to provide students with opportunities to interact with TMDU alumni and worldwide leaders in health sciences. Through this roundtable-type, relaxed atmosphere event, we hope students will be able to find their role models in order to facilitate their career development in becoming future global leaders.

In the fifth FYRM session of academic year 2018 we will be hosting Dr. Osamu Kunii, who graduated from Jichi Medical University and received PhD in epidemiology from the University of Tokyo and Master of Public Health (MPH) at Harvard School of Public Health. After engaging in emergency medical relief as deputy representative of an NGO called Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA), Dr. Kunii worked in the International Medical Centre of Japan; Graduate School of Medicine, University of Tokyo (Assistant Professor); Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Deputy Director); Institute of Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki University (Professor). In 2006, he started working in UNICEF, first in New York headquarters, then in country offices in Myanmar and Somalia. He was appointed Head of Strategy Investment and Impact Division at the Global Fund in 2013.
In the past he has visited over 110 countries in the world for emergency relief, infectious diseases control, maternal and child health projects, health policy and planning, etc.

This session will be carried out in a round-table discussion format, and will cover the following points:

  • What drew him to global health and what are its charms and challenges for him?
  • What were the pros and cons of his working in different sectors/settings?
  • What is Japan’s current role in global health and its future perspectives?
  • How can we be prepared to work for global health?

Everyone is welcome to join us for a hearty discussion!
