61th “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session (2nd in 2021 Series)

We have been holding a series of events called “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session to provide students with opportunities to interact with TMDU alumni and worldwide leaders in health sciences. Through this roundtable-type, relaxed atmosphere event, we hope students will be able to find their role models in order to facilitate their career development in becoming future global leaders.

We will host Dr. Shiho Kino, a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Social Epidemiology, Graduate School of Medicine and School of Public Health, Kyoto University. After graduating from the School of Oral Health Care Sciences at Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Dr. Kino obtained a Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Public Health at King’s College London Dental Institute. Then, she started her career as a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and later at The University of Tokyo. Currently, she is engaging in research regarding social epidemiology at Kyoto University as an SPD researcher. So far, she has published many research papers regarding the disparity of health state caused by various social factors such as academic background, income, culture and type of job. She has greatly contributed to solving healthcare problems by using a broad perspective gained by her international research experience.

This session will be carried out in a round-table discussion format, and will cover the following points.

Everyone is welcome to join us in a hearty discussion.

Topics

  • Personal Background: Decision-making process for current career, motivations behind aspiration to obtain Ph.D. abroad, mission throughout her entire life, her career vision for the future
  • Research themes: What it is like to conduct research in a wide range of fields, connection between healthcare science and social science, difference between the research environments of Japan, the U.S. or U.K.
