2022 Academic English Course Spring Intensive (formerly TOEFL Intensive Course)

As part of TMDU's Top Global University Project, we will offer the following intensive courses for students who would like to improve their English proficiency as well as their TOEFL score. For those that are interested in participating, please submit the application form following the application procedure below. Application deadline is January 24 (Mon.) 5 p.m.

【Course description】
This course is for students who want to improve their English skills. There are three choices of course as follows:
* All courses require  you to take the online iBT Practice Test or the official TOEFL iBT at the end of the course.

  • SW: Speaking and writing (no text required, but you must still take either the official TOEFL iBT or the iBT Practice Test at the end of the course)
  • TOEFL: Speaking, listening, reading, and writing (Official Guide to the TOEFL Test 6th Edition ISBN 978-1260470352 required) **Purchase in person at: COOP in Building 5, B1 or from an online vendor such as Amazon. We leave the choice up to you. Caution: You must have this textbook to attend the course.
  • TOEFL-R (repeating course): Speaking, listening, reading, and writing (Official TOEFL IBT Tests Volume 2, 3rd Edition ISBN 978-1260470338 required) **Purchase in person at: COOP in Building 5, B1 or from an online vendor such as Amazon. We leave the choice up to you. Caution: You must have this textbook to attend the course.

Capacity

Limited to 50 students/ week (Maximum class size is 10 students, Minimum of 5 students/class)

Eligibility

All TMDU students(Undergraduates and graduates from all faculties)

Selection

Should applicants exceed 150, selection will be based on need and academic attitude.

Place

This course  will be held online via Zoom. (Zoom ID and Passcode will be sent after acceptance)

Sessions

Choose from the following.(Indicate order of preference on application form)

  • (Week A)2/21,22(M-T)24,25(Th-F) 9:00~15:00 (180min + 120min、Break 12:00~13:00) [due to national holiday on 2/23]
  • (Week B)2/28 (M)~3/4 (F) 10:00~15:00 (120min × 2、Break 12:00~13:00)
  • (Week C)3/7 (M)~11 (F) 10:00~15:00 (120min × 2、Break 12:00~13:00)

Cost

SW: Around 4,000 yen for online exam

TOEFL / TOEFL-R: Around 8,000 yen (text around 4,000 yen + online exam fee around 4,000 yen)(If taking the official TOEFL iBT test off campus, examination fee is around US$235 as of 2020/10)

Requirements

(1) Participants must attend the entire 20 hours of classroom time, and substitutions are only available for the same day of a following week. Cancellations and requests for schedule changes after acceptance of application should be accompanied by a clear and valid reason for cancellation/change, and acceptance/rejection of such left up to director of course. Attendance is taken seriously and will be presented to the Education Committee if you do not follow the requirements. This information also may be taken into account when applying for overseas training.

(2) Participants are required to take either the TOEFL iBT Practice Test, which will be held on-demand online, or the official TOEFL iBT test provided by CIEE off campus. TOEFL iBT Practice Tests are scheduled to be held within one month from the end of each course schedule, from 9:00 to 15:00 on weekdays, further details regarding testing will be given after enrollment. If taking the official TOEFL iBT test off campus, you must take it within two months of attending the course and submit a photocopy of the off-campus score report to the Global Advancement Administrative Unit.
**Please note, the TOEFL iBT Practice Test is not authorized by ETS as an official test, so the score is not valid for official uses.

The TOEFL iBTP score may be used on campus in the following cases:(Please refer to each application's guidelines for details)
・ Applying to the Health Sciences Leadership Program (HSLP)
・ Applying to overseas study programs (Project Semester and Overseas Clinical Experiences, excluding affiliated school dispatch programs)
・ Undergraduate Student Overseas Study Award and Graduate Student Overseas Research Award
