Kevin Urayama, a clinical epidemiologist in TMDU’s department of Human Genetics and Disease Diversity, joined us for our 7th “Find-Your-Role-Model” session. Dr. Urayama, who grew up in California and received his M.P.H. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, discussed his education and career path with interested students and faculty. There was a lively discussion about Dr. Urayama’s current research into genetic causes of childhood leukemia, as well as about opportunities for students to study public health. Dr. Urayama, who has worked in the U.S., France and Japan and as part of several different research consortiums, discussed the benefits of working in an international setting with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds. His advice was especially helpful for our students interested in conducting clinical research or working outside Japan in the future.
